What Is E-PRAAPTI Aadhaar Portal? How Employees Can Recover Old PF Accounts Easily

Many employees in India lose track of their provident fund balances when they switch jobs multiple times. In several cases, old PF accounts remain inactive because they were created before the Universal Account Number (UAN) system became widely adopted. To address this issue, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization is introducing a new Aadhaar-linked digital platform called E-PRAAPTI.

The portal is designed to help individuals trace and access inactive provident fund accounts that may be linked to previous employment. By enabling Aadhaar-based authentication, the system will allow subscribers to locate older PF accounts and connect them to their current UAN without depending on former employers for verification.

For employees who have worked across multiple organizations, the platform may help recover retirement savings that might otherwise remain dormant.

What Is the E-PRAAPTI Aadhaar Portal

E-PRAAPTI is a digital platform being introduced by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization to simplify the process of locating and reactivating inactive provident fund accounts.

Previously, employees who wanted to retrieve old PF balances often had to contact their previous employers or visit EPFO offices for verification. The process could become complicated when companies had closed, employment records were outdated or member details were incomplete.

The E-PRAAPTI portal aims to simplify this process by allowing individuals to authenticate using Aadhaar and directly search for older PF member IDs associated with their employment records.

Once the account is identified, it can be linked to the current UAN and reactivated through digital verification.

How Employees Can Retrieve Old PF Accounts Through E-PRAAPTI

During the first phase, the portal will enable subscribers to authenticate themselves through Aadhaar and then search for any non-active provident fund accounts based on old PF member ID.

Once the account is found, the user will be able to undertake many transactions such as:

Connecting the old PF account with the new UAN
Updating KYC information like name, date of birth, and identity proof
Updating bank account information
Reactivate the non-active PF account through the internet.

In future phases, the process could become more streamlined so that subscribers are able to find PF accounts without even the need for an old account number/member ID. Thus, it would be easier for employees to track their balance in various PF accounts.

Why Many Provident Fund Accounts Become Inactive

There are many dormant PF accounts in India, especially those held by workers who have changed jobs without transferring their PF balances.

In the past, the PF scheme was highly dependent on the verification process carried out by the employer. For the PF balance to be transferred when an employee moved from one organization to another, the cooperation of the old and new employers had to be ensured. Otherwise, the old account would be left dormant.

The older generation of employees usually had several PF accounts due to their member ID numbers. Without consolidation, these accounts may remain unclaimed for years.

EPFO’s Push Towards Digital PF Services

E-PRAAPTI’s launch is one of the many steps being taken by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization as part of its ongoing digitalization process.

Claim processing through digital means has seen an increase over the past few years. EPFO processed a total of 83.1 million claims in FY26 against 60.1 million claims in FY25. Also, 71.4% of the claims for advance withdrawals are being processed through automation.

The purpose behind these changes is to reduce paperwork and make it easier for members to manage their pension contributions digitally.

Practical Challenges While Recovering Older PF Accounts

Although the E-PRAAPTI portal is expected to simplify PF recovery, certain practical challenges may still arise.

Older PF records sometimes contain discrepancies in names, dates of birth or employment history. These inconsistencies may create verification issues when linking older PF accounts with the current UAN.

In such situations, individuals may need to update KYC details or provide additional documentation before the account can be successfully linked and reactivated.

Why This Matters for Employees and Retirement Planning

From the point of view of financial planning, it becomes crucial to locate and consolidate previous PF accounts.

Previous PF accounts can remain unlinked from existing employment records. This might cause problems during the calculation of the retirement balance.

In this regard, by helping people locate their old PF accounts with the aid of Aadhaar, the E-PRAAPTI portal can prove useful.

In particular, for those who have undergone several changes in employment and are now employed at another firm, it would be necessary to review their employment records and ensure that all their PF accounts are linked to their UAN.
